The Kids Just Want to Ride

Posted on Friday, January 28, 2011 in Kids Dirtbiking

Are you a parent to a kid that likes to ride dirt bikes or ATV’s? As you may well know, the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) of 2008 could potentially ban the sale of kids’ motorcycles and ATVs. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has decided to hold off on requiring third-party testing and certification of kid-sized all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) for lead content until Nov. 27, 2011, due to the Kids Just Want to Ride Act introduced by Representative Denny Rehberg in the U.S. House of Representatives.

The goal of the Kids Just Want to Ride Act is to get a legislative exemption for youth-model motorcycles from the “Lead Law”, which would ban the sale of kids’ dirt bikes. Technically, the sale of these bikes is currently illegal, and dealers are still subject to fines or penalties despite the current stay.

There are many things that you can do to help, such as contacting your representatives in Congress and elected officials and circulating petitions. You can find a list of things you can do to exclude kids’ motorcycles from the CPSIA and more information at http://www.americanmotorcyclist.com/Rights/KeepKidMotorcyclesAndATVsLegal.aspx.
